02/28/2006. Remarks by Jack McKillop: "The French wanted to order 100 aircraft similar to the F4F-3 Wildcat for the French Navy soon after World War II began however Pratt & Whitney could not meet the demand for the R-1830 engine radial engines so they ordered 81 aircraft plus parts for ten others to be equipped with a Wright G205A nine-cylinder radial with single-stage supercharger. The first aircraft, a Model G-36A, made its first flight on May 10, 1940, the same day that the Germans invaded France; none had been delivered before the French surrendered on June 23. The 91 aircraft were taken over by the British for the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm and all were delivered between July and October 1940. Unfortunately, ten were lost at sea when the ship carrying them was sunk by torpedoes. The aircraft in this photo has the British roundel on the fuselage but is painted with French-style rudder stripes." |
