Martyn West Wind

02/28/2019. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk and Wendell Hughes: "Robert E. Martyn of Calgary designed and built this all-wood single-seat light aeroplane, using plans of the Druine Turbulent and Jodel Bébé for construction reference only. Known as the West Wind, this aircraft flew for the first time on May 16, 1960, and within a year had made 110 flights, totaling 33 hours. Reportedly it took l˝ years to build to built the aircraft, at a cost of $700. Martyn flew his West Wind for ten years, once flying it up the to the arctic.

Another West Wind was built by Don J. and C.F. Watson, also of Calgary. Registered to the Watson's as C-FVUS in 1967, it was reregistered to Martyn also on October 10, 1968. The registration was cancelled on January 4, 1990."

Type: Single-seat light monoplane.
Wings: Cantilever low-wing monoplane. Allwood structure, with leading edge torsionbox and plywood covering. Wooden ailerons, covered with fabric and plywood. No flaps. Ground-adjustable metal trimtabs. Fixed letterbox-type slots and endplates.
Fuselage: All-wood structure, plywood covered.
Tail unit: All-wood structure, plywood covered. Endplates on tail plane.
Landing gear: Non-retractable tail wheel type. Box-section steel legs. Piper Cub wheels, tires and hydraulic brakes. Swiveling tail wheel.
Power plant: An 65 hp Continental A65 four-cylinder horizontally-opposed air-cooled engine, driving two-blade Sensenich 72-42 fixed-pitch wooden airscrew.
