Johan Visschedijk: "The SM-1B was introduced in late 1928 (
TC 2-24, October 24, 1928). A total of seventy-four aircraft were built and, besides record-breaking attempts, many were used by airline operators including Braniff Airways, Delta Air Service, and the Thompson Aeronautical Corporation. The pictured aircraft was built in 1929 and registered NC7468, it was fitted with a 220 hp Wright J-5 nine-cylinder air-cooled radial engine. It is the sole surviving Detroiter, although re-engined with a Lycoming R-680 radial."
