No. 2962. Supermarine 361 Spitfire HF.Mk.IXE (N730MJ c/n CBAF 7243)

This Spitfire was built at Castle Bromwich, England, in 1943 and delivered to
the RCAF as MJ730. In 1944 it was transferred to the RAF and served
throughout the Mediterranean. On June 27, 1946 it was delivered to
the Italian AF, overhauled by Aermacchi at Varese, Italy and served
till January 1955, s/n MM4094. Transferred to Israeli AF
s/n 0606, later s/n 20-66, struck off charge in 1956. In 1978 it was
recovered from an Israeli playgroundand transferred to the UK for
restoration. Registered as G-BLAS it was flown for the second maiden
flight by Dave Moore, a Rolls-Royce test pilot, on November 12, 1988.
Reregistered as G-HFIX on August 22, 1989, it was sold to the US in
January 2000 were it was registered as N730MJ. |
