Hawker Hind

12/31/2023. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "The Hind general purpose light day bomber was a developed version of the Hawker Hart. The prototype Hind, K2915, was produced to Spec. G.7/34 and first flew on September 12, 1934. It differed principally in being powered by a fully-supercharged Kestrel V engine, and featured a cut-away gunner's cockpit coaming similar to that of the Demon, a tailwheel in place of the former tailskid, and various other refinements. The first production aircraft, K4636, flew on September 4, 1935. When production ended in June 1938 a total of 508 light bombers and 20 dual-control trainers had been built. Some 144 bombers were subsequently modified as trainers.

About the time that the first production Hinds were beginning to appear in the autumn of 1935 the Swiss Government ordered a single Hind for performance evaluation, and with the exception that no military load was carried the machine, appropriately registered HB-HAL, was similar to the production Hinds of the Royal Air Force. First flown on January 23, 1936, it was delivered later that year. No quantity order followed and HB-HAL was used subsequently for general communications duties."
