Nico Braas: "Developed as a high-altitude interceptor in case the Gloster Meteor jet fighter would fail, Westland designed and built the Spec. F7/41 Welkin. The picture shows the first (DG558/G) of two prototypes built to Spec. F.4/40 that was first flown on November 1, 1942. The suffix /G meant it had to be guarded by an armed sentry at all times."
