09/30/2007. The IS-1 (Istrebitel Skladnoi, folding fighter) could convert from maneuverable biplane to faster monoplane by pneumatically folding its lower wing into the fuselage and upper wing. Initiated by Vasilii Vasilyevich Nikitin's test pilot Vladimir Vasilyevich Shevchenko in 1938, the two converted a Polikarpov I-153 by replacing the upper wing and adding two folding points to the lower wing. It was flown for the first time on November 6, 1940.
