The aircraft was built by de Havilland Australia at Bankstown, New South Wales. The aircraft was acquired by the RAAF as A17-748 T.021. To the civil register as VH-AZI, reregistered as VH-CAD when in service with the Department of Civil Aviation.

Remarks by Ed Coates: "In 1953 the Tasmanian Aero Club at Western Junction, Launceston, purchased two Tigers from the Department of Civil Aviation. VH-BSB was one, VH-BSD the other. VH-BSB was previously VH-CAD. I had the distinction, along with club member Tony Rhedy, of chaperoning this aircraft back to Tasmania from DCA's base at Melbourne's Essendon airport. Both aircraft were quite low time and had been well looked after by DCA. Plus they had canopies. This aircraft was ultimately destroyed in a fire at Mailor's Flat in Victoria in 1957 although by that time the Tassie Aero Club had sold it."
