07/21/2007. Designed by Ing. Giuseppe Gabrielli the G.49 advanced trainer was built in two versions, both fitted with a nine-cylinder air-cooled radial engine. The pictured G.49-1 was fitted with a 550 hp Alvis Leonides 502/4 Mk.24 and flew for the first time in 1953. The G.49-2 (MM556 c/n 2) had a 600 hp Pratt & Whitney R.1340S3H1 and flew for the first time in late September 1952.

The G.49-2 was chosen for a world trip through Europe and the Americas to visit cities where large communities of Italians resided. Registered as I-FIAT and named L'arcobaleno (The Rainbow), it left Turin on August 7, 1957 and flew 32,597 mls (52,460 km) in 55 stages (via Belgium, France, Portugal, Iceland, Canada, the USA, Mexico, Cuba, Guatemala, Costa Rica, San Salvador, Panama, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Argentine, Paraguay, Uruguay, Brazil) to River de Janeiro, where it arrived on February 11, 1958.

I-FIAT is preserved at the Italian AF Museum at Vigna di Valle Airport, Rome, Italy, marked as MM556, code "39".
