North American NA-221 F-86K Sabre

05/31/2018. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "In 1953 NATO adopted the F-86D all-weather interceptor. Equipped with a new fire control system, this version was designated the F-86K. Two YF-86K prototypes were converted from F-86Ds, first flight being made on July 15, 1954, and North American built 120 complete aircraft for Norway and the Netherlands, plus 221 sets of parts for assembly by Fiat in Italy. Of the 221, 63 went to Italy, 62 to France, six to the Netherlands and four to Norway, the balance went to Germany. All 341 aircraft were produced under the Mutual Defense Assitance Program (MDAP), the 221 sets produced for Fiat received USAF serials.

The parts for the pictured 55-4841 were assembled by Fiat and the aircraft was delivered to the French AF in March 1957. It served with Escadron de chasse tout-temps (all-weather fighter squadron) ECTT 2/13 Alpes, and was coded "13-PI" and later "13-SK", for international flights the call sign "FUHPI" was used. The aircraft was struck off charge on March 18, 1964. Initially preserved at Colmar AB, by 1988 it had been transferred to the Musee de l'Air at Paris-Le Bourget."
