In 1951, one year after graduating from the University of Wisconsin with a B. S. in Mechanical Engineer Ray was hired as a design engineer at Consolidated Vultee Aircraft Corp. in San Diego. He was assigned to the Wing and Tail design group where he worked on the following projects:

    Model 340 airliner
    R3Y Tradewind
    880 and 990 Jet Transports
    Nuclear Seaplane Studies
    Tomahawk cruise missile

In 1957 Ray transferred to the Astronautics Division working on the Atlas and Centaur launch vehicles. When Ray retired in 1987 he was working in Preliminary Design.
