Hawker P.1099 Hunter F.Mk.58 & F.Mk.58A

01/31/2008. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk:

J-4022 c/n 41H-697389, first flown February 19, and delivered April 2, 1959, withdrawn from use December 16, 1994. The aircraft was flown to the Szolnok AFB Museum, Hungary, on July 27, 1995.

J-4027 c/n 41H-697393, first flown March 4, and delivered April 8, 1959, withdrawn from use December 16, 1994. The aircraft was flown to the Royal Norwegian AF Museum, Bodø, Norway, on November 15, 1995.

J-4039 c/n 41H-697406, first flown April 15, and delivered May 28, 1959, withdrawn from use October 9, 1991. That day the aircraft landed at Meiringen and during the landing roll the landing gear was deliberately retracted, the aircraft was subsequently scrapped.

J-4100 c/n 41H-697467, first flown March 3, and delivered April 60, 1959, withdrawn from use December 16, 1994. The aircraft was flown to Sion AFB, on March 22, 1995, and put on display.

J-4151 c/n 41H-670839, first flown as an F.Mk.4 August 19, delivered to the RAF September 9, 1955. It became an instructional airframe on April 14, 1967. It was acquired by Hawker Siddeley in January 1973, had the 'Class B' marking G-9-410 allocated and was converted to an F.Mk.58A. The aircraft was delivered on February 19, 1975. It crashed at Lac de Neuchâtel on May 11, 1979.

J-4022 and J-4027 have been used by the Swiss demonstration team Patrouille de Suisse.

To sum it all up, a total of 160 Hawker Hunters were deployed by the Swiss AF over a period of 36 years as fighters, fighter-bombers and ECM platforms. During this period 25 Hunters have been lost to accidents (one was shot down accidentally by another Swiss Hunter) and 15 pilots were killed. Not a bad safety record!
