Boeing 299-O Boeing B-17F Flying Fortress

01/31/2008. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "On 1 February 1943 a B-17F of the 414th Bomber Squadron, 97th Bomber Group, collided with a Focke-Wulf Fw 190 of II./JG 2 while on a mission to Bizerte, Tunesia. The B-17F, flown by Major Robert Coulter, had a wing ripped off, only three crew members were able to bail out.

The Fw 190 plunged into a second B-17F of the ten-ship formation and desintegrated. This pictured B-17F, named All American, had the left horizontal stabilizer and elevator torn off, and the aircraft was nearly cut in half. Pilot Lt. Kendrick R. Bragg brought the plane safely back to the desert base at Biskra Oasis, Algeria.

The aircraft was repaired and flew missions until it was scrapped on March 6, 1945."
