03/31/2008. The Israel Defense Force/Air and Space Arm (IDF/ASA) leased twenty-five Kfir’s to the USN/USMC for dissimilar air combat training, they were designated F-21A. Twelve went to the USN VF-43 at NAS Oceana in April 1985, receiving the BuNo. 163298 to 163309, although they were never applied on the aircraft. Instead, they had a non-standard serial number applied, derived from the aircraft's three-digit IDF/ASA serial prefixed by 999. The USN aircraft were returned to the IDF/ASA in March 1988. The USMC VFMT-401, at Yuma, Arizona, received their thirteen aircraft in July 1987, these had no BuNo., but the same non-standard serials derived from the IDF/ASA serials. The USMC aircraft were returned to Israel on September 29, 1989.
