Long HL-3 Longster III

08/31/2021. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "Designed and built by Les Long of Beaverton in Oregon, the single-seat HL-1 Longster homebuilt aircraft appeared in 1930, initially powered by a 25 hp Henderson motorcycle engine. Later modifications included a 35 hp Long Harlequin 96.2 ci (1.58 l) two-cylinder, horizontally-opposed, air-cooled engine (a conversion of the Henderson engine). The aircraft was redesignated HL-3, also referred to as the Longster III.

Plans for the Longster were published in the magazine Popular Mechanics and about five were built. Powerplant of the pictured aircraft, built by a Mr. Fletcher, was a 23 hp Henderson four-cylinder air-cooled in-line motorcycle engine. The aircraft was donated to the WAAAM by Terry Brandt.
