04/30/2019. Remarks by
Johan Visschedijk: "Although evolved in parallel with the
IAR 15, the IAR 16 was the first of Elie Carafoli's fighters to feature an all-metal structure, for skinning plywood, fabric and duralumin sheet was used. It was powered by a 560 hp Bristol Mercury IVS.2 nine-cylinder radial enclosed by a Townend ring and carried an armament of two 0.303 in (7.7 mm) Vickers guns. First flown in 1934, the IAR 16 was not developed further than a single prototype, bringing to an end Romanian fighter design for several years."
