Stewart SAC-1VW Headwind

03/31/2008. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "Donald Stewart of Oconto, Wisconsin, formed Stewart Aircraft Corporation at Menominee, Michigan, in 1963 to market plans for this single-seat homebuilt aircraft. Construction of his design started in October 1961 and the prototype flew for the first time on March 28, 1962.

It could be flown with an open or enclosed cockpit and the wings could be removed or fitted in about 20 minutes by two persons. It was the first US designed aircraft powered by a Volkswagen motor car engine, a 36 hp modified 1,192 cc example. The aircraft is also known as the Stewart JD1HW1.7 Headwind."
