01/22/2004. Remarks by Carlo Soliani: "The aircraft depicted is a He 111 H-6 of I/KG 26 Löwen Geschwader (Lion Squadron) equipped with two dummy torpedoes for training duties. The H-6 sub-version (introduced in late 1941 and the most widely used among all the various H types) was conceived mainly for anti-ship rôle. Probably the KG 26 (based at Banak and Barfudoss in northern Norway) turned out the most effective Luftwaffe unit that used the H-6 in this way from June 1942, attacking usually the allied cargo ships on the "Kola run" directed to Murmansk and other ports of the USSR. The H-6 was used also as conventional bomber, being the torpedoes replaced by conventional bombs." |
