No. 3268. Blériot Armoured Monoplane "La
Vache" (The Cow)
Remarks found on World War One Modeling Page web site: "By the time war broke out, Blériot had developed a two-seat armoured monoplane powered by an 160 hp Gnome two-row rotary engine. Apparently two were built and both were quickly assimilated into the Aviation militaire. One was flown by Védrines, who named it enigmatically La Vache (the cow). Perhaps he knew best. This aircraft had a fuselage of some aerodynamic refinement, provided by a streamlined casing of papier-mache clothed in fabric and fitted over the basic structure. The forward portion about the cockpits and engines was encased in 3-mm (0.118-in) chrome-nickel steel, and the crew of two sat in close tandem under the cabane structure. A door was provided in each side of the fuselage under the wing to enable the observer to fire at objects under the aircraft." |
