12/29/2014. Remarks by Walter van Tilborg and Johan Visschedijk: "The Model 328 was initially developed in 1987, but the project was temporary halted by Dornier Luftfahrt GmbH. It was later revived and the all new design had Dornier's novel so called TNT wing and was mainly intended as Model 228 successor, with Aermacchi (Italy), Westland (UK) and Dae Woo (South Korea) participating in the program as manufacturers of components. Two prototypes were built (as Series 110), the first of which was first flown December 6, 1991, initially with two Pratt & Whitney PW119 engines. The third aircraft was built as pre-series machine and represented the production model. When in 1996 Fairchild Corporation acquired the majority in Dornier, the company was renamed as Fairchild Dornier GmbH (from 1998 Fairchild Aerospace GmbH) and continued development and production.
328-100: The initial production model, which was powered by two 2,180 hp PW119B engines. The deliveries commenced in 1994, but only few example were built.
328-110: This version was announced in 1994. It offered higher operating weights and had aerodynamic improvements to the fuselage, was fitted with larger diameter propellers and featured two ventral strakes at the rear fuselage, and also a larger dorsal fairing ahead of the vertical tail. Engines were as in the 328-100 model.
328-120: Again increased weights and equipped with higher output PW119C engines. This version offered improved field and hot/high performance and had larger dorsal and ventral fins and again slightly increased diameter propellers.
328-130: Announced in 1997 and fitted with modified flaps for improved t/o performance, ground spoilers, two PW119C engines and an improved rudder-deflection system.
328-200: Also announced 1994 for deliveries commencing 1995-1996. The 328-200 had an improved field performance and the wings featured automatic ground spoilers and increased flap settings for take off. This model had again slightly increased diameter propellers and two PW119C engines.
C-146A Wolfhound: Designation assigned in May 2012 to aircraft operated by the USAF Special Operations Command (SOC) worldwide on classified missions for the transport of personnel and material. These aircraft were purchased second-hand and were modified for its special role by the Sierra Nevada Corporation which installed advanced Honeywell avionics and other equipment, while the landing gear was modified to allow operations from rough and gravel runways. Reportedly the last of 17 C-146As was delivered in July 2013, they have a civilian style color scheme and are usually operated in with civil call signs, while they have (fake) USAF serials that include the construction number.
Fairchild Aerospace GmbH ceased during 2002 and the company later went into liquidation. The production rights were acquired by AvCraft Aviation LLC in USA (AvCraft Aerospace GmbH, Germany), with plans to resume production once the stock of unsold aircraft (5) had been delivered and the final three aircraft were completed in 2006 (production totaled 111, including prototypes). Late 2005 all rights (both 328 and 328JET) were acquired by Club328 in Germany, but not with plans to resume production. However, for the worldwide servicing of the type 328 Support Services GmbH was founded by parent company Jet Services.
The pictured aircraft was built in 1995 and was registered to Jetstream International Airlines in the USA as N440JS on October 19, 1995. Only twelve days later, November 1, 1995, the airline was renamed PSA Airlines. On August 17, 2007, the aircraft was sold to Cirrus Airlines of Germany and the aircraft was reregistered D-CIRE. On January 23, 2011, the aircraft was registered to Sierra Nevada Corporation in the US as N570EF and modified to a C-146A Wolfhound it was registered to the USAF SOC on March 14, 2011. Tail codes seen on this aircraft are N570EF, 53058 and 23058."
