02/05/2004. D.J. Hegland at age 23 during flight training at Curtis Field in 1944. Prior to enlisting he had several hundred hours flying as a crop duster and civilian flight instructor. He spent the remainder of WW II as a flight instructor, logging time in many types of aircraft including T-6, T-7, AT-11, C-45F and TB-25.
