10/31/2010. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "On April 29, 2005, the Força Aérea Brasileira (Brazilian AF) ordered twelve C-295M medium transport aircraft to replace the aging DHC-5A C-115 Buffalo, and to supplement the C-130 Hercules.
The first aircraft, designated C-105A Amazonas, was delivered in October 2006 and was commissioned into service in a formal ceremony at Base Aérea de Manaus on March 31, 2007. Powered by two 680 shp Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-27 turboprops, the Amazonas can carry 73 soldiers, 48 fully equipped paratroopers, 21 stretchers and three medical attendants, or 20,393 lb (9,250 kg) payload.
The SC-105A is dedicated to SAR missions and is assigned to a special SAR squadron, the 2°/10° GAv (Segundo Esquadrão do Décimo Grupo de Aviação, 2nd Squadron/10th Wing) named "Pelicano", and based at Campo Grande AB, 715 mls (1,215 km) west of Rio de Janeiro. For its appearance at the fund raising Royal International Air Tattoo, held at RAF Fairford, over 5,900 mls (9,500 km) to the north-east of its home base, the pictured aircraft was given a special paint scheme."
