05/15/2007. The Dornier Wal was designed in Germany, the Treaty of Versailles of 1918 however, prohibited the construction of aircraft, so the aircraft was built by the Dornier subsidiary Società di Costruzioni Meccaniche di Pisa (SCMP), Marina di Pisa, Italy in 1923. The prototype was flown for the first time on November 6, 1922.

The first customer was the Spanish Navy, initially ordering six aircraft powered by two 300 hp Hipano-Suiza engines and they were delivered in 1923.
In all, over 320 aircraft were built in numerous versions; over 150 in Italy by SCMP, its successor CMASA, and Piaggio. Other manufacturers were CASA in Spain (40), Aviolanda in the Netherlands (38 + 3 assembled from Italian parts), Kawasaki in Japan (3), and from 1932 on Dornier in Germany, making up the balance.

The pictured static replica represents the "Plus Ultra", the second aircraft to cross the South Atlantic on a 6,258 mls (10,072 km) long trip from Palos de Moguer, Spain to Buenos Aires, Argentina, between January 22 and February 10, 1926. For this occasion the aircraft (s/n W.12) was registered M-MWAL, and it took Commander Ramón Franco and his crew, Julio Ruiz de Alda, Juan Manuel Durán and Pablo Rada, 59 hr, 35 min flying time to complete the journey.
