Boeing 367-5-5 YC-97 Stratofreighter

04/30/2010. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "In July 1945, the Army ordered ten service test models of the C-97, of which six as YC-97, Boeing Model 367-5-5, s/n 45-59587 to 45-59592, c/n 15712 to 15717. The YC-97s were virtually identical to the three XC-97s except for revised Andy Gump engine nacelles developed for but not used on late B-29As, increased fuel capacity, and a higher-capacity electrical system. The first YC-97 flew on March 11, 1947, and all were soon put into Air Transport Command Service from Fairfield-Susuin (later Travis AFB), California, to Hawaii.

When the YC-97s were replaced by later models, this one was obtained by the De Long Corporation and was used as sprayer in Arizona, registered as N9538C. In 1961 it was purchased by Seven Seas Airlines Inc., a US charter operator formed in 1959 which started operations from Schiphol, the Netherlands, later from Luxembourg Airport. Seven Seas was declared bankrupt in 1961 and the YC-97 went to Contract Air, who had it registered in Panama as HP-376. It was seized at Brussels Belgium in July 1965 and was broken up in January 1967."
