North American NA-88 XAT-6E

04/15/2018. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "One of a batch of 2,400 AT-6D Texans (serialed 42-84163 to 42-86162, c/n 88-15944 to 88-18343) this aircraft was converted to the sole XAT-6E, when fitted with a high-altitude Ranger V-770-9 twelve-cylinder air-cooled inverted V-engine. On January 23, 1947, the aircraft was withdrawn from use and transferred to the War Assets Administration at Farmingdale AAF, New York, for sale. Only twelve days later, February 4, it was registered as NX74108 to the Fairchild Engine & Airplane Corp. at Farmingdale. Flown by Margaret McGrath it participated in the 1947 Cleveland race, listed as Racer number "61". On June 27, 1951 it was deregistered and sold to South America where it was converted back to an AT-6D, its ultimate fate is unknown. The "XAT-6E" noted at the Western Museum of Flight at Hawthorne, California is a replica converted from another AT-6D."
