01/31/2011. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "Manufactured by Grumman as a Model G.58, this aircraft was delivered to the USN as an F8F-2 with BuNo. 121751. It came on the civil registry as N9885C in 1963, owned by William M. Stead of Reno, Nevada, USA, it was named Smirnoff and flown as Racer number "80". In 1966 it was registered to Moseley Aviation of Tolleson, Arizona, in 1969 to I.N. 'Junior' Burchenall of Paris, Texas.
In November 1972, N9885C was registered to Mike Smith of Johnson, Kansas, and as pictured here, it was renamed 'Lois Jean' and flown as Racer number "41". In 1977 the aircraft was sold to Harold Beal and Charles Smith of Knoxville, Tennessee, and painted in the markings of USN VF-11 Squadron and coded S-200. The aircraft was lost when it crashed on June 18, 1980, the pilot Charles Smith was killed."
