This first Nieuport aircraft was built in 1909 by Société Générale d'Aéro-Locomotion (SGAL), a company formed on January 13, 1908 by Edouard and Charles Nieuport, with financial support from lieutenant de Caumon. The aircraft flew before the end of 1909.
