07/07/2007. Remarks by Bernhard Klein: "In March 1942 there was some panic about the lack of speed to transport P-38 fighters to the Pacific area. The idea came up to equip P-38s with removable floats, which also served as fuel tanks for the 5,000+ mls (8,000+ km) flight to the Pacific. Lockheed prepared this aircraft with lengthened and raised tail booms to keep the tail plane out of the waterspray but the project was cancelled even before the floats ever were attached. The aircraft was surveyed August 19, 1943." |
