04/30/2008. The I-320 was designed to a January 1948 specification for a two-seat twin-engined all-weather day and night interceptor-fighter. The two crew members were seated side-by-side on ejection seats, pilot on the left and radar operator on the right. Two outwardly almost identical prototypes were built, the R-1 and R-2.

The R-1 was powered by two 5,004 lb (2,270 kg) RD-45F (Soviet built Rolls-Royce Nene) centrifugal compressor turbojet engines and was flown for the first time by Yakov I. Vernikov and Sultan Amet-Khan on April 16, 1949.

The R-2 was powered by two 5,952 lb (2,700 kg) Klimov VK-1 centrifugal compressor turbojet engines. It had a raised canopy, larger windscreen, smaller air-brakes and a reshaped tailpipe. It was flown for the first time in November 1949.
