Keith F. Lawler Sr., father of Joe Lawler, left his parent's farm near Kenosha, Wisconsin shortly after the attack on Pearl Harbor and joined the US Marine Corps to become a Naval Cadet and learn to fly. He graduated with honors, became a Flight Instructor at Pensacola NAS and retired with the rank of Captain after the war. During the Korean War he returned to duty and flew C-47s in the Midwest. Keith Lawler flew on board Honor Flight Chicago with other Chicago-area veterans to visit the memorial that is dedicated to them there. Keith Lawler passed away on Sunday, August 23, 2009 at the age of 88. In civilian life Keith Lawler was a member of the Madison, Wisconsin Fire Department, retiring with the rank of Captain also. He and his wife Margaret had ten children and five of the boys were also veterans from 1962 through 1972.
