Lockheed 8A Sirius

06/30/2014. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "After being flown for less than an hour, this Sirius 8A was badly damaged by its pilot-owner, Captain George R. Hutchinson, during a take off at the Los Angeles Municipal Airport on August 2, 1930. It was a one-off, Wasp powered aircraft with reinforced spars and an additional fuselage tank replacing the front cockpit and bringing total capacity to 633 gal (2,396 l). Following its accident it was rebuilt by Lockheed, its additional tank being removed and a second cockpit added forward. It was then sold in 1931 to Victor Fleming and Douglas Fairbanks Sr.

In August 1932, it was sold back to Lockheed to be modified as an Altair 8D and then, registered VH-USB, achieved fame as Sir Charles Kingsford Smith's Lady Southern Cross."
