Giles G-202

06/05/2005. Remarks by Philo Lund: "N416DM is a G-202 designed by Richard Giles and sold by Acrotech. The aircraft was built by Composites Unlimited, a company now located at Scapoose, Oregon, USA. The designer, Richard Giles is the builder of record. First flight and initial testing was by Lew Shattuck in December 1995 out of Troutdale, Oregon, the site of the builder at that time. It now has a little over 500 hours.

The registration number is composed of the 416th Tactical Squadron to which David Mosby belonged (the 416) and DM are his initials. There were a total of 61 kits built with over 24 still flying. The design is still being built by CAP in France as the CAP-222."

David Mosby says: "The engine is a Lycoming AEIO-360 with 10 to 1 compression ratio, flowed and balanced with an estimated 235 hp using 100LL aviation fuel. It has a three-bladed MT propeller. The wing span is 22 ft (6.71 m), length 19 ft 4 in (5.89 m), empty weight 980 lb (445 kg), maximum weight 1,600 lb (726 kg). It has been tested to 260 knots (482 kmh), but the red line is 230 knots (267 mph, 426 kmh). Cruise is 175 knots (201 mph, 324 kmh) burning 10 gal (37.8 l)/hour. Fuel capacity is 58 gal (219.5 l). For aerobatic flight the limit is 10 gal (37.8 l). The roll rate is in excess of 400° per second , and the aileron spades can be manually adjusted to change the roll rate or change the control feel to greater or lesser values. It was designed to 24 g, but limited to 10 gs +/-. It flies very nice, the controls are very light in all regimes, and except that the runway is not visible (normal on this type of airplane) on landing, it is easy to land."
