Built by Canadian Aeroplanes of Toronto, Ontario, the JN-4(Can) was an altered version of the Curtiss JN-3 "Jenny" and was nicknamed "Canuck".

Handwritten text on back of photo: "The crash which resulted in the death of a cadet who couldn't get out of a nose dive. Benbrook, Texas."

Benbrook, a town 10 miles southwest of Ft. Worth, was one of three Royal Flying Corps training fields in Texas, operated during the period October 1917 - April 1918.
