03/31/2008. Remarks by Jack McKillop: "The Fokker C.IV was the first military 2-seat aircraft built by Anthony Fokker in the Netherlands after he moved his factory from Germany in 1919. In 1921, Brigadier General William "Billy" Mitchell, Assistant Chief of the U.S. Army Air Service, went to Europe on a fact finding mission and was impressed with the C-IV and arranged for the purchase of one in 1922. It was designated XCO-4 in the new 1919 designation system with the CO indicating Corps Observation. Two additional refined aircraft were ordered as XCO-4s and following tests, four CO-4As were ordered in 1922 and delivered in 1923. This was the last aircraft on the order and it was tested at McCook Field, Dayton, Ohio, with the McCook Field number P-325." |
