08/12/2006. Remarks by Jack McKillop: "This aircraft was registered G-18-200 by the manufacturer and delivered to the RCAF on November 1, 1957. It was sold to the Canadian airline Wardair on March 20, 1968 and registered CF-WAD. Wardair put it to work in northern Canada where their tough construction and big clamshell doors were advantages especially to the mining industry. It was withdrawn from use and stored in 1976. Thereafter it was operated by North Canada Air and it crashed at Hay River, Northwest Territories on November 20, 1977. It had just left Hay River Airport when it stalled due to shifting load. One crew member was killed, the other seriously injured."
In January 1965, Canadian Forces Head Quarters decided to fit VOR/ILS (very-high frequentie omnidirectional range/instrument landing system), TACAN (tactical aid to navigation), and RDRI weather radar to all Bristol Freighter aircraft. A pre-prototype meeting was held at Western Airways Ltd. (WAL), Uk in April. In June, Bristol 9850 was delivered to WAL for prototype installation, this installation was accepted by the RCAF in August."
