Hawker Hart

11/15/2020. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "The manufacture of K1102 was covered by a contract raised by Rolls-Royce Ltd., under Air Ministry sponsorship, to test early evaporative cooling systems on a Kestrel engine. First flown in mid-1930 at Brooklands, this machine featured steam condensers along the full leading edge length of upper and lower wings with a large streamlined coolant feed pylon forward of the pilot's windscreen.

After having been displayed in the New and Experimental Aircraft Park at the 11th RAF Display at Hendon in the summer of 1930, the aircraft was delivered to Rolls-Royce. During the winter of 1930-31 the coolant system displayed an uncomfortable tendency to shower the crew with supercooled water droplets and K1102 was returned to Brooklands to be fitted with a rudimentary protective canopy."
