This aircraft was original delivered to the Sovjet AF in 1984. Due to the formal division of the Sovjet Union on December 21, 1991 this aircraft was assigned to the Russian AF. When struck off charge it was sold to the USA where it was registered as N454WF on April 21, 2005.

It wears the colors of the US Navy Attack Squadron VA-36 ("Road Runners") while at the USS Independence. However, this aircraft is registered to Guy Willimas of Carson City, Nevada and it has never served with the USN nor landed at an aircraft carrier.

Over 250 Albatrosses have been registered in the USA.
At least six Estonia-registered L-39's are operated by the Breitling Apache Jet Team based in France. Their paint scheme is simular to that of the USN's Blue Angels.
