Caproni Ca.66

07/31/2018. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "In the early 1920s, the Technical Department of the Ministry of Aviation of Italy announced the requirements for a new four-engined night bomber. In 1921, according to these requirements, Aeronautica Caproni at Milan began designing an aircraft that received the design designation LB.4. It was a four-seat single-bay biplane of mixed construction, equipped with four in pairs installed 200 hp Società Piemontese Automobili S.P.A. 6A six-cylinder liquid-cooled in-line engines. Two prototypes were built, redesignated Ca.66 and allotted the military serials MM.16 and MM.17, they were reportedly completed in early 1922. In the same year they were transferred to the Testing Center in Guidonia Montecelio, 14 mls (23 km) north-east of Rome. The type performed well, especially in maneuverability, and was declared winner of the contest, but did not go into production."
