03/31/2011. Remarks by Ron Smith: "The first of seven J/5R built. The Alpine incorporated features of both the J/5B Autocar and J/5L Aiglet Trainer. Basically, it combined the three-seat wide cabin of the J/5L with the long-span wings of the J/5B. Power plant was an 145 hp de Havilland Gipsy Major 10-1 four-cylinder air-cooled inverted in-line engine."
