04/15/2018. Remarks by Walter van Tilborg: "The Wichawk original homebuilt biplane was designed by David D. 'Dave' Blanton of Wichita, Kansas, USA and the side-by-side two-seater was initially marketed for amateur construction by his Javelin Aircraft Company, which provided plans, wing ribs and fuel tanks. The type was more or less an approximately 75% scale replica of the Stearman 75 and it was stressed for +12G and -6G, allowing aerobatics. Development of the Wichhawk started in 1964 and Blanton built the first example with an 180 hp Lycoming O-360 engine. Registered N71DB (the year completed and the builder's initials) it first flew on May 24, 1971. Presently the aircraft is registered to Robert D. 'Bob' Blanton, a son of designer.
Marketing of the Wichawk was later continued by Sport Racer, Inc. Reportedly some 300 sets of plans were sold but only some thirty were completed, of which eighteen in the USA, with engines in the 125 to 300 hp range and examples were built with or without cockpit canopies."
