08/15/2008. Initiated by Bristol as the Type 155 to comply to the Air Ministry Specification B.18/38 for a twin-engined medium bomber, the project was transferred to Armstrong Whitworth where it became the Albemarle. The two prototypes (s/n P1360, P1361) were built by Armstrong Whitworth at Hamble, the 598 production aircraft were built by A.W. Hawkesley Ltd. of Gloucester.

The first 32 Albemarles were completed as bombers while the remainder were completed as: 186 Glider-Tug (GT) and 380 Special Transport (ST) aircraft. They played an important role in the invasions of Sicily (July 1943) and Normandy (June 1944), and in the ill-fated assault on Arnhem (Operation Market Garden, September 1944).
