Airco D.H.9R

06/30/2009. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "The success of the D.H.4R racer, that flew on June 20, 1919, encouraged Airco to produce another racer only a month later, using D.H.9A parts. The single-bay sesquiplane was fitted with a 460 hp Napier Lion II twelve-cylinder liquid-cooled W-engine. Although the temporary registration K-172 was reserved, the D.H.9R was registered to Aircraft Transport & Travel Ltd. (an Airco subsidiary) as G-EAHT on July 23, 1919.

In late July, Captain Gerald Gathergood flew the aircraft to the ELTA (August 1 to September 14, 1919), while there he won an 137 mls (220 km) closed circuit race at 145 mph (233 kmh). On November 15, Captain Gathergood broke several British speed records at Hendon, raising the closed-circuit record to 149.43 mph (240.48 kmh). The D.H.9R was scrapped in 1922."
