Douglas DC-8-11

11/30/2008. Remarks by Johan Visschedijk: "Known as Ship Two this aircraft flew five decades ago.

Following the first flight of the Ship One (there were no prototypes) on May 30, 1958, Ship Two was flown for the first time on November 29, 1958, fitted with four 12,500 lb (5,670 kg) Pratt & Whitney JT3C-4 turbojets. Initially used for structural testing, it was subsequently converted to a DC-8-21 when fitted with four 16,800 lb (7,620 kg) JT4A-9 engines. It was also fitted with wing leading edge slots and new enlarged wing tips before it was delivered to United Air Lines on November 1, 1960.

It was withdrawn from use on January 23, 1978 and broken up at Kingman Arizona."
