Douglas 1333 C-133A Cargomaster

09/30/2009. Remarks by John Voss: "I attended the air show at Travis AFB as they were having a rather special event. The last flyable Douglas C-133 Cargomaster made its last flight ever as its owner was donating it to the Jimmy Doolittle Air & Space Museum at Travis AFB.

As one of a grand total of 50 C-133s produced, this aircraft was originally delivered to the USAF on Dec 27, 1957, with s/n 56-1999. With the introduction of the C-5A Galaxy in the 1970s all C-133s were SOC with a few going to air museums, a few going to private owners and the balanced were scrapped....

56-1999 came on the civil registry as N199AB in April 1978, although on a restricted permit, and for the last 30 years it has been flying around in Alaska. It was operated mostly for the State of Alaska carrying just about every conceivable outsized cargo into the outback of Alaska. Trucks, fire engines, school buses, oil drilling pipe, etc.

It was flown down from Anchorage, Alaska on August 28, 2008, to McChord AFB, Washington, then the final flight was made to Travis AFB on August 30, 2008, arriving late morning. The sound it made was a very low frequency growl, reminiscent of a B-36 (for those who can remember that anyway).
