Johan Visschedijk: "In 1938 the USAAC issued a request for a new primary trainer with tandem-seating and an open cockpit. The fly-off would be held at Wright Field, Dayton, Ohio, in 1939. Fairchild entered the contest with the modified M-62 prototype. After the fly-off, the USAAC declared the Fairchild PT-19 Cornell the winner and 4,889 PT-19s, PT-19As and PT-19Bs were built by Fairchild (4,225), Aeronca (620), and St. Louis (44) built."
