The FM-2 was the last version of the Wildcat produced in numbers. Two XF4F-8 prototypes were built by Grumman, thereafter it was produced by Eastern Aircraft Division of General Motors, at Linden, New Jersey. A total of 5523 aircraft were ordered, later 746 were cancelled, some were produced as the Wildcat VI for the British Royal Navy and some as the FM-2P.

The pictured aircraft was delivered to the US Navy with BuNo. 86690. in 1944. It came on the civil register in 1956 as N20HA, in August 1993 it was reregistered to N70637. Two months later it became N49JC and was still registered as such in February 2007.
