09/04/1961. Jacqueline Cochrane, president of the National Aeronautic
Association, has claimed a new women's world jet speed record of
842.6 mph (1,356 kmh) for the 9.32 mls (15 km) straightaway course.
Miss Cochran made the two passes over the course at Edwards AFB,
California, USA, August 24, at 36,000 ft (10,973 m) altitude in a
Northrop T-38 trainer.
