What you need to know, and more, about sharing your images with us

Please do not e-mail large or numerous attachments without getting a 'green light.'
We need to avoid the possibility of our e-mail quotas being exceeded when we are unable to process incoming messages promptly. Please contact Ron before sending large and/or numerous attachments. Frequent high-volume contributors are supplied with a dedicated mailbox for their submissions. If you have a large number of images to send us and you can send them to us on a CD, it will make life easier for us. Mailing address will be supplied by e-mail.

Do you need to have the print or negative in order to put a image on the web site?
Except for digital camera images, the answer is "Yes" in most cases. But you may also serve as a conduit for someone else who has no means or desire to be involved in scanning and sending material to us and has approved your doing so. We do not knowingly publish images scanned from publications or copied from other web sites. We do sometimes publish images found on other web sites if they are contributed by the "owner".

We're partial to images of new or rare aircraft types and scans of old photos
At last count we had almost 1,700 different aircraft types on our pages. Our focus is on increasing that number significantly. We have a pretty good indexing system for our photos, so you should be able to easily check to see if we already have a particular type already. Old and rare photos are also warmly received, regardless of condition whether we already have a photo of the aircraft pictured or not. It is better to send what you have and allow us to pick and choose than for you to try to guess what we might want to use.

Photo selection and editing
We are looking for sharp images without parts of the aircraft cut off or obscured by vehicles, people, other aircraft etc. We can adjust brightness, contrast, colour etc., rotate to horizontal and crop images but to do so effectively we need images that are no less than 1000 pixels wide. Expert and professional photographers: we will not edit your images without your approval... let us know if you desire this treatment. But all images will be compressed to keep file sizes down so we can minimize the site's hosting costs.

Scanning requirements
Measure the width in inches of the item to be scanned and divide 1000 by that dimension to determine our minimum requirement. For instance, if you have an 8X10 photograph, divide 1000 by 10 to get a minimum scanning resolution of 100, and then select the next higher resolution available on your scanner. If the aircraft pictured doesn't take up the entire area of the photo, you may scan just a part of the photo, but try to keep the original proportions. If in doubt, scan at 300 dpi even though this may be more than we need. Slides need to be scanned at 600 or higher dpi. Although we aren't experts, we may be able to provide advice if you are new to scanning. For those of you who think our web site has an honest face, we will scan your material for you and, of course, return it.

Information requirements
Tell us what you know about the photo: where was it taken, by whom, when, and interesting stories and anecdotes. We can work with you on editing the text.

What can you expect after you send us images?
There is no limit on the number of images you can submit. We have hundreds of images ready to be posted to the web site. We rotate through the material allocating equal time to every contributor so that nobody has to wait too long to see some of their images posted on the web site. The rotation takes about 4-6 weeks. Those submitting few photos will see them listed on the "Contributions" menu page and those with many to send will have their photos listed on a dedicated "Collection" menu page. We will contact you with additional details and options.

Do you give up any rights by placing your photos on the web site?
Absolutely not. Although we prefer to have exclusivity, you retain complete authority to decide about granting permission for use of your photos for any purpose and to use them any way you want. Any requests we receive to copy your photos will be relayed to you unless you authorize us to grant permission on your behalf.
