Avro 685 York C.Mk.I

08/12/2006. Remarks by Jack McKillop: "This aircraft was delivered to No. 511 Squadron, RAF, at RAF Lyneham, Wiltshire, England, March 14, 1946, with s/n MW287; it subsequently transferred to two other units, i.e., No. 1332 Heavy Conversion Unit, RAF Nutts Corner, County Antrim, Northern Ireland on July 5, 1947; and RAF Lyneham on March 25, 1949. The York was withdrawn from service and placed in storage at No. 23 MU at RAF Aldergrove, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, in August 1951.

This York was sold to Canada's Maritime Central Airways (MCA), Moncton, New Brunswick, on August 7, 1955 and registered CF-HIP. MCA had won contracts to provide air transportation for 17 of the 42 Distant Early Warning (DEW) Stations being built in the Canadian north and needed the York to haul cargo.

MCA sold the aircraft to Associated Airways in April 1956; this airline was also involved in the construction of the DEW Line. Associated Airways was purchased by Pacific Western Airways (PWA) in 1956 and this aircraft was part of the deal. PWA also had contracts to supply the DEW line sites and continued to do so.

This aircraft was withdrawn from use and scrapped in May 1960."
