05/20/2003. Remarks by Carlo Soliani: "Single seat fighter, first flew on February 16, 1938. Only a prototype was built, because Regia Aeronautica chose Fiat CR 42 for series production (see photo No. 2475). On August 3, 1939 the Ca.165 reached a top speed of 290 mph (467 kmh) probably becoming the fastest fixed-landing gear biplane fighter in the world. Being a military prototype, the aircraft bears on the fuselage side the then mandatory roundel enclosing the abbreviated manufacturer's name. In fact the letters "CT" in the circle painted in fuselage means "Caproni Taliedo". Taliedo (a Milan, Italy, suburb) was the headquarters of Aeroplani Caproni company." |
